Professor Hafiz Abubakar MFR, the 11th Deputy Governor of Kano        State was born on Thursday, November 25, 1954 into the family of a renown and highly respected Islamic Scholar Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Dangoggo in   Sabon Sara Quarters of Gwale Local Government area.

Before his enrollment into formal education, young Hafiz received a solid training in Islamic Studies  from his grandfather Sheikh Mahmud Dangoggo and his father Malam Abubakar Mahmud Dangoggo.

He was enrolled into Dandago Primary School at the age of six but moved to Dambatta Boarding Primary School where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1967. He then proceeded to Government Secondary School, Gwale where he obtained his WASC certificate in 1972. Prof Hafiz received Higher National Diploma (HND) Certificate from Kaduna Polytechnic, Postgraduate Diploma Certificate in Clinical Nutrition from Queen Elizabeth  College of the University of London in 1984, Prof Hafiz is a man with an Insatiable quest for knowledge, immediately after his PGD proceeded to University of Reading in the United Kingdom  for his Masters and PhD degrees in Food science and Cereal Biochemistry respectively between 1985 and 1992.

Professor Hafiz Abubakar worked briefly with  information Division of the Kano State Military Governor`s office as well as Ministry of Health as Clerical Officer and Nutrition officer respectively. He did his NYSC with Ayangba Agricultural Development Agency (World Bank Project) in Benue State from 1980-81.


He started his Teaching career in 1981 as Assistant Lecturer (in Food Science and Nutrition) at the School of Management Studies, of Kano State Polytechnic. He also served as Researcher/Demonstrator with the Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Reading, United Kingdom  from 1989-1994.

On his return to Kano State Polytechnic in 1994, after his PhD degree, Prof Hafiz was appointed Principal Lecturer. One year after, he moved to Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Bayero University Kano as senior lecturer and rose to the positions of a Reader, Associate Professor and Subsequently professor in 2011. He held administrative positions at the University such as Head of Biochemistry Department, Director Centre for Biotechnology Research, Dean Faculty of Biomedical Sciences  and lastly Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) in 2014.



Professor Hafiz began his politics in 1980s during the 2nd Republic. He actively served as member of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) think-tank team. On return of democracy in 1999, Prof Hafiz came into limelight  when Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso appointed him as his political adviser and later Commissioner of Finance. In 2003, Kwankwaso also appointed him as his Special Assistant when he was appointed as Minister of Defence by President Obasanjo.

 During Governor Kwankwaso’s second tenure he offered immeasurable contributions to the success of the administration. He was particularly instrumental to the establishment of North-West University as chairman of the implementation committee

It was in recognition of Prof Hafiz Abubakar’s interest, commitment, loyalty and dedication to the course of promoting human development, that he was, along with Governor Ganduje, recommended for National Award in 2014 which subsequently earned him the prestigious national merit honour of Member Federal Republic, MFR.

 It was in the same year Kano State Deputy Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and APC Gubernatorial flag bearer of the APC choosed him among array of contending individuals to be his running mate.

On wining the mandate of the people of kano with a land slide victory Prof Hafiz Abubakar was sworn in as the Deputy Governor on may 29, 2015 and appointed as Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology in July of the same. The Executive Governor of Kano state Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, OFR while rejoicing with him on 62 year anniversary described him thus  “ a person of exemplary high moral character, good principles and outstanding ethical conduct, your commitment and selfless contributions to the success of our administration and general development of Kano State has been very outstanding and commendable. Your unalloyed loyalty and zeal towards the improvement of the well-being of our people is not doubt admirable and unmatched.”

 Professor Hafiz was the Secretary, Kano State Students’ Union and member Amnesty International. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Food, Science and Technology, Member of the Institute of Food Science and Technology, United Kingdom and many other professional bodies.

 An erudite scholar of international repute, Prof Hafiz has published several  articles in national and International academic/professional journals as well as books among which is Sorghum Starch: Physico-Chemical Properties and Food Application and Kafi Zabo (Monosodium Glutamate): a Seasoning or Sickening Agent?. All published by Ahmadu Bello University Press

 He was coordinator of Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nation (FAO-UN)  food intervention programmes in Nigeria as well as consultants to the Organization. Professor Hafiz Abubakar served as member Board of trustees, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Member Board of Management of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) and member Board of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

 He is happily married with children and grand children.
